But when the summer temperatures, which often reach in excess of 100 degrees, where can these highly educated golf aficionados escape to keep their golf fix in play during the summer?

2011treetopssignature02483forblogThe answer: Escape to Gaylord, Michigan, the America’s Summer Golf Mecca in northern Michigan. Golfers can now easily dodge the Texas heat now from Dallas via American Airlines direct into Traverse City Cherry Capital Airport. Then it’s a relaxing car or shuttle ride for an hour through some beautiful northern scenery. It is no wonder some of the top course designers in the game left their mark in the region.

Leading the way in the region is the nationally acclaimed Treetops Resort, which features 81-holes of golf. Robert Trent Jones Sr. built The Masterpiece, one of his last courses where he was on property in 1987. He helped coin the resorts name from the popular 6th hole, a par 3 that drops 180 feet with views that stretch for over 40-miles. Following Jones Sr., Tom Fazio was convinced to come to the area and build his only design, The Premier, in Michigan, which features wide sweeping fairways, fun green complexes, and some great short par 4’s.

It’s regarded the richest payday ever for a single shot, $1 million.

Smith also design the 3rd 18-hole course on the property. The Signature combines the strong features of Ireland together with the ruggedness of northern Michigan. He also designed the resorts Tradition course, which offers a more open links style course that is fun for all levels of play.

Otsego has been around since 1939 and doubles as one of the country’s only private ski clubs in the winter. Otsego features the spectacular Tribute course overlooking the Sturgeon River Valley, and the player friendly Classic course.

If affordability and quality golf are on the menu, then make sure to check out the Loon Golf Resort, which features 54-holes, The Loon, The Lakes, and The Ridge, formally Marsh Ridge Resort. Of the three, The Loon is the most popular with its premier conditions and country club atmosphere. In addition to the Loon Golf Resort, The Natural at Beaver Creek also offers an affordable golf package option featuring its popular Natural Golf Course and rustic golf cabins that are perfect for golfers looking to escape to a more peaceful and hardwood setting.
